ASK Who???

Just received a call from a pretty darn good names sourcer – for discussion sake, we’ll call this person “Maureen.” Now “Maureen” has concerns that she has oversaturated herself in an online sort of way. She wonders if people are sick of hearing her talk about “The phone is the best way to go, blah, blah, blah” or “Ethics, shmethics, dial away and ye shall receive, blah, blah, blah” or better yet, “I’m so tired of hearing about Internet sourcing that I’m gonna Google my breakfast all over my keyboard.”

We’ve all read “Maureen’s” voluminous posts and probably have wondered “doesn’t she ever sleep?” There’s the 17 ERE Groups she regularly reads and replies to, a few yahoo Groups, researchzilla, Recruiting.com, and countless other sites related to underground or subversive names sourcing.

But when “Maureen” called today and asked whether I thought she should just blog and stop spending hour upon hour on sites when she could be names sourcing for all her well-known clients, I thought that I’d bring her query to the masses. So here it is…

Should “Maureen” be given her own blog to serve as a names sourcing bully pulpit?

[note from Steve: Think of this as a way to free up other Groups, sites, etc. for posts from other people and not receive hundreds of “Maureen” posts daily]

Please post your replies here. Thank you.

A Recruiter Is Calling. Should You Answer?

Q. Out of the blue, a competitor offers you a job for more money than you’re earning now. Should you try to use the offer to get a raise from your current employer?

Answer

[may require a log-in to my favorite liberal newspaper – lol]

Hard to find, impossible to pronounce, and prohibitively expensive

Seems that Grand Marnier has introduced a new advertising campaign to sell its $225-a-bottle vintage liqueur, Cuve du Cent Cinquantenaire.
The tagline on the print advertisement reads, “Hard to find, impossible to pronounce, and prohibitively expensive.” Hmmm, sounds similar to how some describe specific areas of recruiting…

Another Fundraiser Who Deserves the Press

Since recruiting is all about developing relationships, here’s another New Yorker who recruiters should know about. My friend Sue Williams is running this year’s New York Marathon for Team Continuum whose collective goal is to raise funds to provide immediate help to cancer patients being treated in New York’s cancer treatment centers.

From their website…

Although Team Continuum is a localized organization, not many people realize that over 50% of the cancer patients being treated in New York are either from out of state or from overseas. That?s not surprising when you realize that New York probably has the finest treatment facilities in the world, in some instances providing life saving treatments that people can?t get anywhere else.

Our mission, by its very nature, extends far and wide, for example: in early July a story was published in a national newspaper in Australia about a little Australian boy in New York that Team Continuum has been helping. Or the breast cancer patient in south Florida, that we extended help to when she had nobody else to turn to, or on the island of Jamaica, where there are terrible stories of unnecessary cancer related deaths. If we are asked for assistance, we do our very best to be there when asked.

We try to serve the cancer patient community wherever they may be, and with whatever help they may need. We are not about laboratory research; we are about helping cancer patients here and now. The donations you make go to provide immediate help for cancer patients that most need it. Whether that be with direct assistance or by funding patient programs in the hospitals that we serve. Over 97% of every dollar donated goes to where it was intended by the donor. Cancer Patient Care and Services.

If you’d like to donate – and yes, Mark Israel deserves your financial support too – please click here – under “Select an athlete to sponsor” choose Sue Williams…believe me, those $10 donations add up quickly. Above all, remember that runners make excellent employees and ambassadors of goodwill and networkers.

Mark Israel – The Riding Recruiter

Just received an email from Mark Israel, the bookish recruiting manager at Barnes and Noble.  He has decided – at the last minute – to ride the MS Bike Tour on Sunday, October 16th in NYC. Last year he raised $2,025 – with this being the 20th anniversary of the MS Bike Tour, he hopes to raise much more than last year.

As we all know, every little bit helps: Mark has an easy way to donate by credit card through his donation webpage. Alternatively, you can make a check payable to: “MS Bike Tour” and send it to him at…

9921 67th Road, Apt. 8A
Forest Hills, NY 11375

Please include “in support of Mark Israel” somewhere on the check.

Since words of encouragement are just as valuable as donations, feel free to contact Mark with any questions at misrael8@gmail.com or at his desk (212-414-6368).

FYI, donations will provide comprehensive support services, educational programs, and fund a national research initative into the cause, treatments and cure for MS.

Ethical Lies

Just wondering (was just reading one of Barry Geiman’s “What would you do?” threads) …what happens when a recruiter uses “ethical” sourcing techniques only to present a candidate who is found to have lied on their resume?

The Frozen Zone

I’d like to announce the passing of my hard drive. It was a wonderful hard drive, one that served me well for over three glorious years.

It passed quite suddenly, going from faint clicks to a rapid crescendo of mind-numbing rat-a-tat-atats in a matter of hours – I…sniff…just didn’t have the time to say goodbye. Nor to backup my files. :(

So just like the head of Bosox legend Ted Williams…I froze the sucker – for 24 hours. And I was able to retrieve most of my files. :o

Is your hard drive healthy????

Headhunter, Copyrights and Trademarks

Posted by Steve on October 3, 2005

With all the furor associated with professional and college sports teams and their use of Native American nicknames (e.g., Seminoles, Fighting Sioux), I’m sure you can all undertand that associating one organization with the culture of another is just not right (I’m being very serious).

Given this, why do we as a profession continue to accept the use of “headhunter” especially when the Asmat tribe of New Guniea has been know to take offense to others using their moniker?

I believe an immediate cessation of the term “headhunter” is called for – perhaps this will also assist in the move towards more ethical recruiting and enable Sullivan, Adler, et. al. to have a reasonably clear Inbox at least once in their lives.

Same goes for the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame…
